As we transition into 2025, the day Donald Trump steps into office to begin his four-year tenure as the 47th President of the United States draws nearer. The recent presidential campaign saw the presence of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk standing by Trump's side, increasing voters' confidence and their belief in a new and better America. This partnership of, arguably, the two most influential figures in politics and business is set to be revolutionary for industries and thrilling for the stock market. Some see this as an opportunity for explosive growth while others fear it would make the otherwise stable markets highly volatile due to Trump’s controversial legacy.
Donald Trump has long been an influential figure as a businessman and former President of the United States. His tenure was based on a pro-business model which included reducing corporate tax from 35% to 21% significantly boosting the investment in the manufacturing sector. Additionally, the energy sector benefited from the deregulation and policies favouring domestic production. Other sectors that flourished were the finance and agricultural sectors. The Dodd-Frank Act Rollback helped the financial sector by allowing firms and individuals to borrow and lend larger amounts of money increasing economic growth. However, the markets were also forced to adapt to some unpredictable and sudden political manoeuvres.
On the other hand, Elon Musk is one of the most creative and optimistic entrepreneurs of the modern era. As the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has revolutionised the concept of electric vehicles and successfully launched and brought back a spacecraft from Earth’s orbit, becoming the CEO of the first private company to do so. Musk is known to make bold and sometimes controversial statements on the social media platform X has successfully captured the attention of several investors. In recent times, Musk has had a significant impact on speculative markets, majorly being involved in cryptocurrency.
For some, this collaboration represents a great opportunity. With Trump’s pro-business policies and Musk’s innovative model, sectors like renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology could see paramount growth. Trump has hinted at major reforms in permitting processes for energy projects and infrastructure upgrades, while Musk’s vision for sustainable energy solutions aligns with global trends toward decarbonization. Together, they might facilitate large-scale investments in projects that would have otherwise been delayed.

Moreover, the Trump-Musk alliance could potentially bridge gaps in space exploration funding and policy. With NASA’s budget constraints, SpaceX’s private sector dominance and Trump’s enthusiasm for space initiatives could lead to transformative developments in space travel and exploration.
Yet, not all investors are sold on this vision. Critics argue that Trump’s unpredictable decision-making could deter long-term investment. His trade wars during his previous administration created substantial volatility in global markets, and some fear that history could repeat itself. Additionally, Musk’s unfiltered comments on social media and tendency to make impulsive financial decisions—such as his controversial acquisition of X—raise concerns about whether this partnership might amplify market instability.

Ethical Concerns and Populist Undertones
Beyond the financial implications, ethical concerns linger. Critics worry that this partnership could prioritise profit over sustainability or equity. Trump’s policies on environmental deregulation during his first presidency raised alarm among climate activists, and some fear Musk’s collaboration with him could undermine Tesla’s environmentally conscious branding.
Others point to the populist undertones of their partnership. Trump and Musk have a shared ability to captivate audiences, often leveraging social media and public appearances to influence opinion. While this charisma may inspire innovation, it also poses risks of polarisation, with critics accusing the duo of prioritising their agendas over the nation’s broader interests.
What Lies Ahead
As Trump prepares to assume office, the world watches closely. The stock market, a barometer of investor sentiment, may become a battleground of optimism and caution. Analysts suggest that sectors directly influenced by their policies—clean energy, technology, infrastructure, and space exploration—will likely experience significant fluctuations.
Ultimately, the success of this partnership depends on their ability to balance innovation with stability. While the potential for groundbreaking advancements is undeniable, the risks of populism and volatility cannot be ignored. Investors are left to decide whether Trump and Musk’s combined influence represents a leap toward a prosperous future or a gamble with unpredictable consequences.
Only time will reveal whether this partnership delivers on its promises or becomes a cautionary tale of ambition and unpredictability.
